Sayram Lake

Sayram Lake is in the mountain basin in the western part of Tianshan in the city of Bole, Xin-jiang. In Mongolian it is called Sayramzhuoer, meaning "the lake on the ridge of mountains." The lake is about 19 miles from east to west, and 12 miles from south to north, covering an area of 176 square miles. With an altitude of 6,801 feet, it is one of the highland lakes in Xinjiang. Sayram Lake, together with the hilly countries and forests around it, has become a famous tourist attraction. Every year when winter comes, snow falls down onto the surface of the lake, and the water freezes. Surrounded by-ice mountains and snow fields, the slightly oval lake adds a trace of spring to them. When summer comes, flowers blossom and grass spreads on the lakeside. The far-flung prairies are dotted with tents; smoke from kitchen chimneys wave in the wind; flocks and herds graze in large numbers. The picturesque Sayram Lake is the largest base of aquatic products in the prefecture. Every July on the lakeside prairie people celebrate Nadamu, making the lake even more beautiful. When the natural scenery mingles with the happy atmosphere of the holiday, there are many beautiful things to enjoy.
