Ghost Town

Ghost Town is situated on the Gobi Desert east of Zhungeer Basin, about 62 miles from Karamay, with an altitude of 1,148 feet in an area of about 39 square miles. Due to its peculiar wind-eroded features the city is also called the Town of Wind. Whenever the wind blows, yellow sand flies all over the landscape. Flying sand and stones rage in the town, making sad and shrill sounds, just like the crying of ghosts and the howling of wolves, causing some people to tremble with fear. In Mongolian it is called Sulumuhake, and in Kazak it is Shayi-tankeerxi, both meaning "a ghost-haunted place." But when the sun rises the next morning, Ghost Town becomes quiet and peaceful in the sunshine, looking extremely beautiful and totally different from the scary atmosphere in the night. In Ghost Town there is a strange-looking hill that appears to be the ruins of an ancient castle. On the left side of the hill stand two huge rocks, one big, one small, both looking like old castles and gate towers. The hill changes daily: When the morning sun shines, it looks like a warrior wrapped by rays of morning sunshine; when the sun rises higher, it looks like an old grandfather wearing a bamboo hat. Due to diastrophism or tectonic distortion, the surface of Ghost Town is strange and abrupt. Rich in petroleum and natural asphalt, the place is a gold mine for economic and tourist-related development.
