This area got its name from the many wild apples growing in the valley. The view is pleasant and unique. For a long time it has been considered a tourist resort in Xinjiang, with a reputation as the most beautiful sight in Yili. The valley runs 17 miles through North Tianshan Mountain. Once a strategic section of the northern Silk Road connecting China with Central Asia and Europe, it is still an important part of Urumqi-Yili Main Road. When Genghis Khan began to conquer the west, he ordered hills to be chiseled, roads made, and bridges built. The mountain roads are twisting and rough south of Pine Head, but they are the most difficult part of the valley. A waterfall pours from the mountains down into the valley, like white silk hang­ing in the sky, looking very spectacular. In Fruit Valley the climate is cool, and the view is very beautiful, with lofty mountains, flourishing trees, colorful flowers, spurting wells, and plunging waterfalls. When Lin Zexu was banished to Xinjiang, he could not help but marvel at the beauty of Fruit Valley when flowers blossomed in summer. He said: "It is like being in the valley of ten thousand flowers."
