Shiquanhe

At an altitude of 14,108 feet, Shiquanhe (named after the Shiquan River) is the highest town in China as well as the political, economic, and cultural center of the Ngari region. Major natural resources here include minerals, among which gems, jade, and coal are dominant, as well as solar energy and geo-thermal heat. Economic resources here include wool, cashmere, and highland barley.

In recent years, with the help of the central government and Hebei and Shanxi provinces, the town has experienced great changes. The appearance of such amenities as computers, supermarkets, and public telephones makes Shiquanhe a modern town in this border area.
