Tibet Museum

The Tibet Museum is located in the southeastern corner of Norbulingka, in Lhasa. Covering a total area of 253,307 square feet, the museum is equipped with modern facilities to ensure a quality experience for visitors, as well as safety and the efficient administration of the museum itself.

The museum building is a pioneer institution in the history of Tibet. Designed by a Han Chinese architect from Sichuan Province, the complex is a wonderful combination of Chinese and Ti- betan architectural styles. Upon entering the Prelude Hall, visitors' attention is immediately caught by the colorfully ornamented beams, pillars, lintels, banners, and wall hangings. As visitors make their way through the museum, they will notice that it is divided into two main sections. The first consists of two exhibition halls on the first floor, featuring the splendid history of Tibet and its abundant natural resources. The other section is on the second floor and comprises five small exhibition halls displaying Tibetan religion, folk customs, treasures, and arts and crafts. The Tibet Museum houses a rich collection of prehistoric cultural artifacts including statues of the Buddha in different postures, imperial jade seals, gold albums, gifts granted by emperors, colorful tangkas, and various printed Sanskrit and Tibetan scriptures. Visitors can also examine a variety of folk arts such as unique Tibetan handicrafts, costumes, jewelry, and ornaments of gold, silver, and jade, in addition to fine Chinese pottery.
