Chakpori Hill

Rising up beside Potala Palace, the peak of Chak-pori Hill is 12,221 feet high. From atop the hill, you can see a panorama of the ancient city and the surrounding landscape. During the seventeenth century, to further the development of Tibetan medicine, a temple was built at the top of the hill, where lamas selected from other temples were brought to study traditional Tibetan medicine. Inside the temple is a large statue of the Buddhist Medicine King. Legend has it that this king is able to treat patients no matter what their diseases are or how difficult they are to cure. Consequently, the hill is also called Yaowang Shan, translated as "Medicine King Hill." On the southeastern slope is an extremely well-preserved grotto, which contains more than 70 engraved statues. The grotto is in the shape of an irregular rectangle with a large stone pillar at its center. The space between the pillar and the surrounding cave walls is so small that only one person can pass at a time. Nonetheless, many pilgrims enter the grotto and walk clockwise, demonstrating their piety.
