Dongyue Temple

This temple complex and folk custom museum is located a short distance from the Chaoyangmen subway entrance at 141 Chaoyangmen Outer Street. Built in the early thirteenth century, the main temple enshrines Huang Feihu, the emperor of Dongyue, in addition to many Taoist figures, plaques, and pillars. The complex comprises three large courtyards, 76 sacred offices, extraordinary archways and gates, the north China school of Taoism, 89 excavated pillars, and about 200 halls or rooms; the whole area covers more than 100,000 square feet. The temple offers a series of programs for praying for good fortune, and the museum hosts folk customs exhibitions throughout the year. On the 28th of the third lunar month, a temple fair takes place, and various folk custom exhibitions are held at the Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Moon Festival, and the Double Ninth Festival. At the back of the palace is the Hell Hall, which houses many figures of good and bad luck deities.
