Office of Commander in Chief of the Beiyang Fleet

This is the command center of the first modern navy of China and the only senior military yamen of the Qing Dynasty still intact. Located on Liugong Island (Liugong Dao), Weihai city, the office occupies 6,564 square miles. Twelve years into Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty, the government set up the Beiyang Fleet and located the office on Liugong Island, which was the headquarters of the fleet, habitually called the Beiyang Fleet Commander's Yamen. Backing against the mountain in the north and facing the sea in the south, the yamen is a brick-and-wood structure surrounded by a long wall. Along its ordinate axis there are three courtyards in the front, the middle, and the back. The whole building group is decorated with upturned eaves and painted beams.
