Sumeru Mount Grottoes
There are 100 grottoes on Mount Sumeru at the eastern foot of Xumi Mountain, northwest of Guyuan County inNingxia. First built in North Wei Dynasty, and rebuilt throughout many subsequent dynasties, these grottoes contain exquisite sculptures of Western Zhou culture. So far, more than 20 grottoes have been preserved with incomparable treasures. The largest sculpture, about 85 feet tall, is that of Sakyamuni, which was carved in 849. There are also tablet inscriptions from various dynasties in the grottoes.
