Sumeru Mount Grottoes
There are 100 grottoes on Mount Sumeru at the eastern foot of Xumi Mountain, northwest of Guyuan County inNingxia. First built in North Wei Dynasty, and rebuilt throughout manysubsequent dynasties, these grottoes contain exquisite sculptures of Western Zhou culture. So far, more than 20 grottoes have been preserved with incomparable treasures. The largest sculpture, about 85 feet tall, is that of Sakyamuni, which was carved in 849. There are also tablet inscriptions from various dynasties in the grottoes.
Liupan Mountain
Also known as the ancient winding path of Long Mountain, Liupan Mountain is situated in the south of Ningxia, in the triangle zone created by Xi'an, Yinchuan, and Lanzhou. With its long history and important location, Liupan Mountain continues to be admired for its resplendent cultural heritage. It is located on the Silk Road, and was the operating base for military operations. The Liupan Mountain Nature Reserve was established here in 1982 with the objective of protecting the forest lands and indigenous flora and fauna.
