Northern Song Ancient City Wall

Now called the Ganzhou ancient city wall, it runs from the Xijin Gate (Xijin Men) to Bajing Terrace (along the Zhang River) and ends at the bridgehead of the East River by way of the Yongjin Gate (Yongjin Men) and the Jianchun Gate (Jianchun Men). It was first built as an earthen wall in the Later Liang Dynasty. After repair and consolidation during the dynasties that followed, it was turned into a 4-mile-long brick wall. At present 12,139 feet of the ancient city wall still exists and is about 23 feet high and 13 feet wide. There are 10 watchtowers and 1 attached tower (Ma Mian) left on the city wall. Bajing Terrace on the northeastern wall is the only restored gate tower; the cannon tower of the West Gate (Ximen Paocheng) is also extant. There is a treasure trove of 52 1 different kinds of bricks in the wall, on which there are many inscriptions
