Wintong Pagoda (Wentong Ta)

Originally named Zunsheng Pagoda (Zybsgebg Ta), Wintong Pagoda is situated beside the canal and Shaohu Lake in the northwestern corner of the ancient city in Huai'an. This example of classical Buddhist architecture was built in the second year of Emperor Zhangzong in the Tang Dynasty (708). It was originally an all-wood pagoda but was rebuilt as a brick pagoda in 984. The pagoda is a seven-story octagon, exactly 100 feet tall. The shape of the pagoda itself actually resembles two parabolas. The pagoda holds a statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin) and four statues of Sakyamuni.
