Fanjing Mountain
Fanjing Mountain is located at the border area of Jiang-kou, Yinjiang, and Songtao counties. It covers an area of 219 square miles and is the tallest mountain in the Wuling Range, at 8,440 feet. It was called Sanshangu in ancient times, and later Jiulong Mountain or Yue-jing Mountain. Since the Ming Dynasty, it has been called Fanjing Mountain. Its main attractions include Laojingding ("Old Golden Gop"), Jingding ("Golden Top"), Jiulong ("Nine Dragons") Pool, Baiyun ("White Clouds") Temple, and Tianx-ian ("Fairy") Bridge. The Fanjing Mountain boasts abundant green vegetation and clear water. A series of creeks, known as Ninety-nine Creeks, merges into eleven main streams including the Heiwan River and the Macao River, which in turn form waterfalls. Since the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620), temples and roads have been built on Fanjing Mountain, which has since become a famous Buddhist mountain equal to the distant Emei Mountain, Wutai Mountain, Putuo Mountain, and Jiuhua Mountain. There are 48 temples and convents on Fanjing Mountain, including Cheng'en Temple, Baoguo Temple, Sakyamuni Hall, and Maitreya Hall. All these make the mountain a sacred place to Buddhists. Over the past several hundred years, an unbroken stream of pilgrims has visited the mountain. Yan Yinlang, Zhao Puchu, and Qigong, among others, left inscriptions here. The Fanjing Mountain is included in the UNESCO International Man and Biosphere Reserve Network.
