Chishui River Scenic Area

The Chishui River Scenic Area, located in the north of Guizhou Province adjoining three counties in south Sichuan, is known as the Gate of North Guizhou. It covers an area of 1,900 square miles, including waterfalls, bamboo forests, spiny tree ferns, the Danxia landscape, and rain forests. It also holds the history, culture, and historical artifacts of the Long March, thus constituting a tourist attraction that combines ecology with education and culture. There are 352 streams of various sizes, more than 790 pools, lakes and reservoirs, and numerous waterfalls, which gives Chishui City the appellation "A City with Thousands of Waterfalls." The Shizhangdong Grand Waterfall, 262 feet wide and 250 feet high, is considered the number one tourist attraction in South Sichuan and North Guizhou. Its roar is audible for almost a quarter of a mile. Nearby are vast camellia woods and stretches of azaleas and spiny tree ferns. The Danxia landscape in the Chishui River Scenic Area boasts many unique sites, including Danxia-chibi, Guzhaifengji ("Isolated and Narrow Ridges"), Qishanyishi ("Extraordinary Mountains and Rocks"), Yan langdongxue ("Rock Corridors and Caves"), and the Danxia Valley. The spiny tree ferns are another interesting sight in this scenic spot, covering an area of 12 square miles. As the only surviving primitive forest of tree ferns at the same latitude around the globe, the area is called by scientists "the Alsophila spinulosa Kingdom by the Chishui River," the city of Chishui has a history of more than 900 years and contains cultural sites such as stone walls and gates, temples and palaces, and numerous exquisite stone carvings. Historical attractions include many memorial sites of the Chinese Red Army's four passes of the Chishui River.
