China tour-- Firecracker Festival

China tour news: At this traditional folk festival of the Dong ethnic group, firecrackers are lit. The first firecracker signifies the booming population; the second signifies economic prosperity; the third signifies a bumper harvest. An iron ring, the symbol of happiness, is tied to every firecracker with red and green strings. The iron ring is launched into the sky by the force of the gunpowder. When it falls back to earth, people vie with each other to grab it—called "seizing the firecracker." It's said that whoever gets the firecracker will have a growing family and economic prosperity as well as happiness and health.

At the end of the event, young men and women gather together to sing Dong opera, perform color tunes, play Lusheng, a reed-pipe wind instrument, and dance. When dusk comes, campfires are lit and people either sing Dong opera or engage in a freestyle singing contest. The festive scene is full of joy and laughter.
