ardang Land Formations is located 112 miles northwest of Dunhuang City. The geo­graphical conditions have formed continuous groups of these formations, which cover about 154 square miles and are precious geological heritage.

The typical formation is a wind-eroded mound or hillocks found near Lop Nor. These large tracts of hillocks rise from a flat sandstone layer. Anxi Coun­ty, commonly called "wind storehouse of the world," lies on a narrow corridor between two mountains. Its altitude is just 3,839 feet above sea level, and its terrain is low and flat. When air currents blow in, they funnel through this narrow corridor and produce strong horizontal winds, something like blowing air through a thin pipeline. Thousands of years of this wind combined with the blazing sun have changed the flat sandstone layer into all kinds of forms. The magnificent sights at­tract many visitors.
