Quanzhou Tianhou Palace (Tianhou Gong)
Located on Tianhou Road near the south gate of the city, the palace was built in the Southern Song Dynasty in 1196 in honor of a sea goddess who was believed to watch over the sailors at sea and provide them safety.
The palace was given the name of "Shunji" by Emperor Ningzong. It means "sailing down the wind." In 1680, Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty designated the goddess, a daughter of the Lin family, as "Tianhou guarding the country and protecting the people." Thus the palace was renamed "Tianhou Palace."
