China tour-- She Ethnic Group

China tour news: The majority of the She ethnic group live in Fujian and Zhejiang, and Fujian is the province most densely populated by the She. Ninety-nine percent of them speak a language similar to the Hakka dialect but Chinese is generally used too. The She refer to themselves as "shanha" (San-Hak), in which ha means "guest." So Shanha means "guests residing in the mountain." Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, they have been called "She." As to their origin, there have been different opinions.

Generally speaking, the She started to live in the mountainous areas bordering Fujian, Guangzhou, and Jiangsu provinces as early as the seventh century. They didn't start to migrate to the central and northern parts of Fujiang until the Song Dynasty.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, they started to move to eastern Fujian and southern Zhejiang in large numbers. The She are mainly engaged in agricultural production and are quite experienced in growing rice and tea. She women are good at embroidery and weaving. Mountain folk songs epitomize She culture. The dragon head carved on the She's ancestor cane is their totem symbol.
