Heaven Pit in Xiaozhai
There is a large, mysterious heaven pit in the village of Xiaozhai, in Fengjie County. Geologically the hole is called a karst funnel, which is formed through the collapse of a water-eroded cave or results from erosion by surface water. According to one story, it was formed by the impact of a meteorite several hundred million years ago. The largest of its kind in the world, the funnel is 2,172 feet in diameter at the top, 1,713 feet in diameter at the bottom, and 2,185 feet deep. There is a clear underground river flowing through the bottom of the Xiaozhai heaven pit.
