Cloud Dwelling Temple (Yunju Si)

The Yunju Temple is located at the foot of Baidai Mountain in the southwest of the Fangshan District. Built in the late Sui and early Tang Dynasties, the temple is now lauded as Beijing's answer to Dunhuang because of its collection of 14,000 stone slabs carved with the full text of the Tripitaka (including sutra-pitaka, vinaya-pitaka, and abhidharma-pitaka). Through the renovation of successive dynasties, it now has five courtyards and six palaces with side halls, palaces for emperors, and monks' rooms. Two pagodas facing south and north respectively stand opposite each other. The cliffside sculptures of Buddhist figures from the Tang Dynasty rank among the best in the world.
