1.Visas:
All tourists need an entry visa for P.R. China.If you go as part of agroup, the tour operator will obtain this, groups visa will be issued for groups with at least 10.
Individual travellers can approach the embassy of People's Republicof China in their country. The embassy requires your passport, valid for at least two months after trip.
2.Chinese Currency:
The official currency used in China is the renminbi( RMB) which issued and controlled by state bank, the People's Bank of China. The basic unit is the Yuan(also called 'kuai') one yuan is worth 10 Jiao-
also called 'mao'-or 100 Fen. So 1 Jiao (mao) is woth 10 Fen. There are 1,2,5,10,20,50 and 100 yuan notes. 1,2 and 5 jiao notes and 1,2 and 5 Fen notes.There are also Fen coins in 1, 2 and 5 Fen pieces.
3.Climate and clothing:
China lies mainly in the temperate and subtropical zones. Itssouthern part of China is warm, humid and rainy. Its northern part ofChina is dry and windy.
In spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) , a cottonjacket and woollen sweater would be fine.
In summer (June to August) cool cotton garments are recommended.
In winter time (December to February) a light cotton-patted coat will
keep you warm enough in the south. But in the north, a heavy woollencoat or down parka is a must.
4. Local time:
The time difference between China and Britain is eight hours. Chinese time is in advance of British time. When it is midnight in London, it is 8:00a.m in Beijing. The same time operates throughout China since there are no time zones.
5. Electricity:
Electricity is 220 volts, 50 cycles AC. Most modern hotels will have international standard two pin sockets, while elsewhere the three pinplugs are frequently found.
6. Business hours:
Shops are open on all days of the week, including public holidays. Opening hours are usually from 8:30 a.m.( or 9:00a.m. ) to 9:00p.m. Government offices and banks are usually open from Monday to Friday
8:30a.m. to 5:30p.m.
7.Shopping:
In China, you will be tempted by the wonderful local handicrafts, as well as antiques, silks, scrolls, elegant jade carvings and many other items that will suggest themselves to you as sonvenirs of your visit. You can do your shopping everywhere, some prices are fixed, some place you can bargain.
8. Postal Services:
You will find postal facilites in all Chinese hotels letters and post cards to and from China take around six days. You can find poststamps at the hotel concierge or local post office.
