Mount Jiuhua (Jiuhua Shan)

Mount Jiuhua, southeast of Wuhu, is one of the Four Holy Mountains revered by Chinese Buddhists. Its highest point is the summit of the Ten Kings (Shiwang Feng), which is 4,400 feet high. All its major scenic spots and temples are found within an area of 39 square miles. These include 86 temples enshrined with 6,800 Buddhist statues and inhabited by 700 or so monks and nuns. Large numbers of monasteries were built here in the Eastern Jin period; there were some 300 in existence in the seventeenth century, providing accommodation for more than 5,000 monks. Fifty-six of these sacred buildings remain intact and house over 1,300 old documents.
